A Girl's Story
Monday, May 28,2012
An eleven-year-old girl [name withheld] from Nuwakot, a rural part of Nepal, was brought to Kathmandu by her uncle and deserted in a home as a home-servant. She was terribly humiliated and abused in that home during her four days of horrible stay. However, she managed to escape on the fifth day. Luckily she was rescued by Lalitpur Metropolitan Police on the sixth day and was kept in the police station, Jawlakhel. We were informed by LMP on the same day about this girl and immediately we reached the police station to inspect the situation. After conversing with the girl we came to know about her family members in her village: it came to light that her mother had died and her step-mother had sent her off to Kathmandu to work and earn, whilst she was studying in Grade 3 in a government school. Moved by her story we decided to take her refuge and kept her with us for three days. Meanwhile, we teamed up with LMP and were successful in tracing the girl's family. Finally, after a thorough check by the LMP for the girl's family in every districts (states) of Nepal, on the fourth day this girl was reunited with her family in Nuwakot.
Message: Child Labour exists in Nepal and is fuelled by poverty-stricken families in rural areas, cruelness of stepmothers, and heartlessness of parents. We strongly believe that a collective effort must be undertaken in order to discourage and uproot Child Labour in Nepal. So far we've been successful in rescuing eighteen children and reunited them with their families. Two from the eighteen children are staying with us after it was confirmed that they were orphans.
It's our humble request to everyone to discourage Child Labour and not keep children as home-servants. Let us treat all children with equal respect, love and affection.
